Material manufacturer AV has secured the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) PLUS certification for its site in South Deerfield, Mass., USA. The site is produces high performance specialty films used in many applications across multiple market segments, such as healthcare and mobility. The companys polycarbonate compounding facility in Newark, Ohio, as well as its third-largest site worldwide, Baytown, Texas, had already received this important certification. It underscores the companys commitment to sustainability and enables it to supply customers with thermoplastic films for medical packaging and other applications made from recycled and bio-attributed raw materials.

Healthcare manufacturers are increasingly adopting sustainable materials to reduce their carbon footprint, and it is our goal to help customers reach their sustainability ambitions, said Sam Shodi, Head of Specialty Films North America, AV.

According to Shodi, the Makrofol? polycarbonate film provides the transparency, toughness and sterilization suitability needed for many medical applications an example of which is medical implant packaging. This advancement meets the demands of our healthcare customers, where sustainable materials are crucial for reducing environmental impact while maintaining high quality and safety standards, he concluded.

With the mass balance approach, bio-based or recycled raw materials are fed in at an early stage of raw material extraction and mathematically allocated to the finished products. This saves fossil raw materials and reduces CO2 emissions, while the quality of the mass-balanced products remains identical to that of purely fossil-based products. With this drop-in solution, manufacturers can continue to use their proven formulations, equipment and processes.

ISCC is an internationally recognized sustainability certification for biomass and bioenergy. The standard covers all stages of the value chain and is used worldwide. AV has major sites across all regions that are ISCC PLUS certified. Among them are world-scale sites like Baytown, Texas; Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany; Shanghai, China; Map Ta Phut, Thailand; and Antwerp, Belgium.

Customers can discover more about AVs mass balance films and other premium material solutions, including how they support sustainability goals and drive advancements in medical devices, at the upcoming and trade fairs, November 11-14 in Dsseldorf, Germany.

Designated by the Ministry of Education as Grandparents Appreciation Day, August 25th is also the main day of the 2024 AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp. This years camp sessions, held in Changhua (8/10), Pingtung (8/17), and Taipei (8/24-25), are being co-organized by the government of each host city. With the support of 50 AV employees and 13 social workers, nine sessions are taking place over the course of four days, serving a total of 300 grandparents and grandchildren. Thanks to the success of previous camp themes Grandmas Magical Kitchen and Grandpas Secret Garden, 44% of this years participants are repeat attendees of the previous years camps.

Unlike the previous themes, where grandchildren were introduced to the world of their grandparents, this years theme, Grandchildrens Happy Kingdom, invites grandparents into the imaginary world of their grandchildren. The event begins with participants making a model of their interlocked hands, immortalizing their present memories of each other. After receiving the finished handmade memento, one grandfather shed a few tears, explaining, This is a sculpture of my grandson and I holding hands. This is the physical representation of one of the most precious moments in my life! I will keep it safely and cherish it well. One participating granddaughter also very emotionally said, I believe that when I see this sculpture 20 years from now, I will think of this event and recall the happy memory of learning science together with my grandmother! A mother who successfully enrolled her grandchild and grandfather for the August 24th event in Taipei said happily: "For three consecutive years, I have helped register my child and grandfather, but we were unsuccessful in getting selected via the lucky draws for the first two years. This time we finally got accepted. The AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp is highly praised among mothers - it's an awesome program and I'm really excited!"

The series of camp experiments have been designed according to the spiral learning principles which AV is known for. The first experiment involves exploring how water, which can deform upon the addition of an external force, can form a water tornado in a bottle. The next experiment is making non-Newtonian fluid, which can temporarily solidify depending on the total speed and intensity of the external force, providing amusement for both adults and children. The final experiment, which is very popular amongst children, is learning to make solid starry sky slime, a jelly-like substance containing tiny shimmering stars.

The AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp also provides participants with an extended experiment kit for continuing science exploration at home. The DIY experiment kit C Visible Sounds: The Sounds of Wonderland C includes video demonstrations led by hearing-impaired students from the AV Science club at Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired. Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an said, Science sparks creativity, and creativity sparks imagination. AV has specially collaborated with teachers and hearing-impaired students at Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired to create experiment demonstrations titled Immersive Sound: Great Discoveries by Hearing-Impaired Students and to distribute the Visible Sounds experiment kits. This collaboration further promotes the values of DEI, encouraging the public to be more open minded and accept different perspectives.

Dr. Eva Langerbeck, Chief Representative & Executive Director of the German Trade Office Taipei said, "It is an honor to join this year's AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp. The theme, 'Grandkids' Happy Kingdom,' creatively brings grandparents into the world their grandchildren love, all while fostering intergenerational bonding through engaging science activities. I am delighted to see how German companies in Taiwan are not only driving economic ties but also deeply contributing to local communities in meaningful ways."

Dr. Carsten Wildebrand, Managing Director of AV Taiwan, stated, The AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp is full of love and inclusivity based. This month, we have seen adorable grandparents and grandchildren from all over Taiwan transform into scientists of all sizes, exploring the wonders of science in everyday life together with laughter and a warm atmosphere. This not only strengthens their bond but also creates unique and beautiful memories.

In addition to the original plan of having Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, and sign language volunteers, the 2024 AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp also provided Indonesian and English-speaking volunteers. This year, 30% of participants chose non-Mandarin language services for the camp activities. According to the survey results, 100% of grandparents and grandchildren agreed that the event strengthened their relationship, 96% indicated that they understood each other better through this event, and 97% were satisfied with the volunteer services which catered to their different language needs.*

This years camp is designed in collaboration with Professor Liang-Rong Hsu, a Golden Tripod Award winner, and his team including teacher Tiffany Chen. The event is attended by The Head of Department of Social Affairs in Changhua County, Lan-Hsin Wang, The Pingtung County Department of Social Affairs Deputy Director Zih-Yun Syu, The Taipei City Department of Education Senior Specialist Shu-Fei Yang, The Chief Representative & Executive Director of the German Trade Office Taipei Dr. Eva Langerbeck, and The AV Taiwan Managing Director Dr. Carsten Wildebrand.

AV is pleased to announce registration is now open for its popular Do-It-Yourself experiment for elementary school students. This free kit, which was well received by the Taiwan Popular Science Train, is part of the AV MagicMaterials School program, which aims to promote DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) values through chemistry. This years kit theme, Visible Sound: Sounds of Wonderland, highlights the role of hearing-impaired students as mentors in guiding children through the wonders of science.

Many people assume that hearing-impaired students will encounter obstacles in understanding sound related sciences. However, our experiments are designed with the aim to break down such beliefs, said Carsten Wildebrand, Managing Director of AV Taiwan. I would like to extend special thanks to the teachers from the AV Science Club at Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired and to Jao-Fang Shiu from the Make Science Fun Association. Through sensory-based teaching methods, they enable hearing-impaired students to deeply grasp the scientific principles behind sound. By distributing these experimental kits, we aim to inspire children across Taiwan to explore the wonders of sound science at home under the guidance of the hearing-impaired children.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to AV for introducing new scientific resources to all hearing-impaired schools in Taiwan, said Zhao Lihua, Principal of Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired. Our students have greatly benefited from this project. Some of our hearing-impaired children are completely deaf, while others can hear sounds but cannot comprehend them. Nevertheless, they have found joy and learning through the visually engaging and sensory-based courses provided by AVs Science Club. The children had the chance to discover that the volume of the sound affects the intensity of the accompanying vibrations through AVs Lets Play with The Science of Sounds course. Witnessing them experience and learn the science of sound through the touch, and even teaching hearing students about visible sound, moves me deeply as a principal.

Through the experiment kit and video demonstration, children will have the opportunity to see various sound-related movements and feel the accompanying vibrations to learn about the science of sound. AV Taiwan has prepared 1,000 of these free experimental kits for elementary school students across Taiwan. These kits will also be provided to the 2024 AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp participants, enabling grandparents and grandchildren to continue exploring science together at home under the instruction of hearing-impaired students.

These demonstrations not only showcase the potential and abilities of hearing-impaired students in scientific experiments, but also open a window for them to understand and explore the mysteries of science in their own unique ways, said Chih-Min Tang, Commissioner of Department of Education, Taipei City Government. I believe that hearing-impaired students can make significant contributions in the field of science by utilizing their creativity and talents. Additionally, hearing children and grandparents participating in the AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp can learn from the hearing-impaired students, allowing the seeds of diversity and inclusion to take root and flourish in their hearts.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important elements of AVs culture, and the AV MagicMaterial School program is based on these principles which was also once named a finalist for the Gartner Excellence in ESG, Sustainability and DEI Communications Communications Award. On the other hand, through various inclusive activities, children from different backgrounds can enjoy playing with science while also learning, understanding, and respecting each others differences, as well as exploring their own limitless capabilities.

AV Taiwan announced registration is open for its award-winning AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp, which will take place in Taipei, Changhua, and Pingtung in August 2024. With this years theme, Grandchilds Wonderland, AV hopes to guide grandparents into a world of wonder and share what children around the globe are crazy about now. The camp will start with grandparents and grandchildren making molds of their hands as a memento of their precious time together. This will be followed by childrens favorite experiment, making galaxy slime, as well as fun science experiments such as non-Newtonian fluid and water tornado.

Previous camp themes focused on grandma or grandpa, and our aim was to let children discover that their grandparents were more capable than they imagined, said Dr. Carsten Wildebrand, Managing Director of AV Taiwan. This time, we want to lead grandparents into their grandchildrens world. This also reflects the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI): letting different generations get to know each other more closely and become more involved in each others worlds. AV invites grandparents and grandchildren across Taiwan to join our camp this year and to enjoy the fun of science in Grandchilds Wonderland.

Participants will also receive an after-camp experiment kit to take away and do together. This includes a video demonstrated by hearing-impaired children from AVs MagicMaterial School, a project that aims to protect science as a human right for hearing-impaired children as well as let their capability be seen. Grandparents and grandchildren can follow the step-by-step instructions of the hearing-impaired children to complete the experiment at home. Through this, AV hopes to embed the value of DEI in childrens hearts, as well as develop their interest in science, and encourage grandparents to exercise their minds through lifelong learning.

Also in the spirit of DEI, to serve more families, the 2024 camp is being offered in six languages. In addition to Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hokka and sign language, this year Indonesian and English have been added, especially for new immigrants who can only communicate in these languages. Volunteers who can speak all these languages will be providing assistance at the camp.

The 2024 AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp is being co-organized by the Department of Education of Taipei City and the Departments of Social Affairs of Changhua County Government and Pingtung County Government.

In a society with rapidly advancing technology, we are grateful to AV Taiwan, which leads a reversed way of thinking, for inviting grandparents to explore the world through their grandchildrens eyes, said Hui-Mei Wang, the Magistrate of Changhua County. This meaningful activity encourages interaction and emotional expression between grandparents and grandchildren, further bridging the generational gap and fostering a vision of intergenerational harmony.

Pingtung County Government is honored to once again collaborate with AV to host the Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp, said Chun-Mi Chou, Magistrate of Pingtung County. This event furthers our commitment to a family-centered, community-based multigenerational service network. Grandparents and children join together in engaging science experiments, enhancing family understanding and trust, and strengthening emotional bonds. Building these intergenerational connections is fundamental to our care and support system.

The first round of AVs Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp will be held on August 10, 2024 at Changhua County Governments ChangHua Child & Youth Center at Xihu. All applicants must be a team of a grandchild and their grandparent, grandchildren must be of elementary school age, and no entry fee is required. Low-income households will be prioritized for admission.

Today, August 27, is Grandparents Day in Taiwan, and is also the main event day of the 2023 AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp. This years camp received more than 850 applications, and has been held on August 12th, August 19th, and August 26 to August 27 at Changhua county, PingTung county and Taipei city respectively. All the local city and county governments at each camp location have served as co-organizers. A total of 60 AV employees and 13 social workers from the Department of Social Affairs have served a total of 296 grandparents and grandchildren at 11 sessions in four days.

The success of the previous camps theme, Grandmas Magic Kitchen, meant this years camp, Grandpas Secret Garden, attracted the participation of 5% more elderly people who had never taken part in a science experiment. This means 85% of the grandparents this year had never done an experiment before in their life. After the camp activities, all the grandchildren agreed that cooperating with their grandparents to complete the experiments had made them realize that grandpa and grandma are much more knowledgable than they ever imagined!*

If you want to make a really big soap bubble, should you blow the bubble slowly or quickly? This was the question put to grandparents and grandchildren when the camp began. Grandparents and grandchildren were then invited to the stage to demonstrate their ideas and see if they had the correct answer. This meant the camp started with a great deal of laughter! Next came the bouncing bubble experiment. This required each grandchild to work with their grandparent to bounce the bubble as many times as they could on their hands. So far, the highest record is 25 bounces from a grandpa and grandson from Pintung! The secret weapon behind this magic is the cotton gloves worn by participants. The soft cotton fibers act like springs, buffering the force of hitting the bubbles and allowing the bubbles to bounce on the hand.

The camp also used an interesting and easy-to-understand way to explain the science behind a tiny, eye-catching polymer ball filled with water. Grandparents and grandchildren were invited to the stage for a gift exchange, serving as an analogy for the ion exchange between sodium and calcium that occurs when sodium alginate is added to calcium lactate. The calcium ions trigger cross-linking within the sodium alginate, resulting in the formation of a soft and flexible gel that efficiently retains water. Edible dyes were added to that gel to create tiny, colored water balls. Then grandparents and grandchildren worked on a gardening project by putting the colorful balls in a conical flask and inserting a plant C the polymer balls will release water to the plant. This was the most popular project among the participants this year as they could take the plants home and continue growing them together.

One grandpa said emotionally: Thank you, AV! Ill definitely take good care of this scientific gardening work completed by my granddaughter and myself, because it represents such happy memories for both of us. Ill remember this special moment for the rest of my life. His granddaughter hugged him and said: Although Grandpa and I dont live together, whenever I visit Grandpas house in the future Ill definitely go and visit this little plant too!

Another grandfather expressed: Im really happy to join this camp. It not only enhances the friendship between grandparents and grandchildren, but also encourages elderly people like me to use our brains in an interesting way. This is the first time in my life Ive done experiments. I think such activities will help to slow down the onset of dementia for the elderly.

Another granddaughter said shyly to her Grandma: I really didnt expect Grandma could be so clever! You can even guide me to complete science experiments C thank you!

Wan-An Chiang, Mayor of Taipei City, said: Children are our future, and our elders are a treasure trove of wisdom. This AV Grandparent-Grandchildren Science Camp, which was co-organized by the Taipei City Government, is not only fun but also imparts valuable scientific knowledge. While encouraging lifelong learning for the elderly, it can also nurture the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.

Aging and inclusion are global trends. I am really happy to see that county and city governments are working together with AV, said Axel Limberg, Chief Representative & Executive Director of German Trade Office Taipei. AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp allows grandparents and grandchildren not only to get to know each other better but also narrows the generation gap at the same time!"

AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp has been designed with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in mind, said Dr. Carsten Wildebrand, Managing Director of AV Taiwan. We are happy to see different generations gather together to experience the wonderful and interesting scientific phenomena around us. These activities can create memories that may take root in their hearts and never fade.

30% of the grandparents in this camp can only communicate in Taiwanese or Hakka. According to the results of the after-event questionnaire,* AV volunteers who can speak in different dialects were appointed. AV and the Cologne-based agency Uniplan are winners of this year's Red Dot Design Award in the category "Digital Solutions C Trade Fair". Both partners are being honored for an integrated digital and real-world experience they developed on the occasion of the leading plastics trade fair, K 2022. It is based on three pillars: the digital platform , the integrated booth concept STAGE including a lecture program and the researcher portrait series MEET THE INNOVATORS.

"With our multi-layered campaign, we are pursuing the goal of establishing contacts with many partners to advance the industry on its path to climate neutrality and the circular economy," explains Dr. Christian Haessler, one of the two project managers for K 2022 at AV. "This communicative 360 approach was also expressed in the motto of our appearance at K 2022, 'Crafting Connections With You'." The Red Dot label has established itself internationally as one of the most coveted seals of quality for good design.

Rdiger Mae?en, CEO Europe at Uniplan, is equally positive: "The good co-creative collaboration and the innovative concept were fundamental to the success of this holistic campaign. Together with AV, we have driven the circular economy agenda in the industry by creating an authentic exchange on multiple channels. Therefore, we are even more pleased that the sustainable campaign approach not only convinced the global target audience, but also the jury of the Red Dot Award."

    Creating connections with digital platform

In order to connect with target groups around the world at an early stage and offer them a holistic, long-term experience as a "home base," AV and Uniplan designed a digital event platform called "SPACE." It went live several months before the start of the trade show and provided information about planned activities at the booth and the company's major highlight topics:

    • Crafting Circular Economy
    • Crafting Electrification
    • Crafting Sustainable Living
    • Crafting Smart Designs

    A stage for current trends

These Topic Clusters also formed the basis for the second pillar C the integrated STAGE booth concept. As the other AV project manager Dr. Christopher Stillings explains, "Not only the exhibits and topic clusters, but also the wide-ranging lecture program in the central Talks Arena were tailored to these topics. Inspiring guests from well-known companies and universities C all actors in their respective fields C captivated the audience with keynotes on current trends and technologies and during panel discussions. Not only booth visitors participated, but also viewers around the world who followed the live broadcasts via social media."

Another highlight is the Color Material Finish (CMF) Sample Library, a collection of plastic samples that makes materials visible and tangible. Part of Uniplan?s and AV's STAGE concept is that the booth C or parts of it C can be used repeatedly for further exhibitions. Sustainability aspects and the reduction of CO2 emissions were also at the forefront in the selection of materials for the trade show appearance itself. The success proves both partners right: Thus, the quality of contacts was significantly improved compared to K 2019, and a positive response developed both externally and internally over a longer period of time.

    Innovators in the spotlight

While innovative developments are showcased and (hopefully) get the attention they deserve, the researchers behind them are often not visible. In the video series "Meet The Innovators" AV gives a voice to some of them and their inventions C see the blog post. They were introduced to a larger audience at K 2022, but prominent guests continue to discuss important innovations and technologies in the "Meet The Innovators" livestream series.

Many inspiring encounters at K 2022 have already led to a large number of new partnerships, technologies and material solutions. They form a valuable basis for developments that AV plans to showcase at the next major trade show appearance at K 2025. The company's motto may be different then C but the message remains that partnerships are the key to achieving a climate-neutral and circular economy: "Crafting Connections With You".

A Red Dot Award rarely comes alone

Back in May 2023, AV and its partner Accesso Dynamics were honored with an award offered by Red Dot and Koelnmesse. At the furniture supplier trade show interzum 2023, they received the "Best of the Best" interzum Award for their technology. This technology, first presented at K 2022, enables products with complex but seamless shapes. The development also contributes to sustainability, as the products are partly made from bio-based raw materials, are repairable and can be mechanically recycled at the end of their useful life.

AV and Uniplan were also nominated for the Heavent Award in the "Forum, Summit, Congress, Fair Award" category for their communication concept for K 2022. A total of 132 projects from event, experimental and live marketing agencies as well as companies and trade fair and congress organizers were submitted for this year's event competition.

Established in 2014, AV MagicMaterial School, which was named a finalist for the 2022 Gartner Communications Award in the category of Excellence in ESG, Sustainability and DEI Communications, will mark its tenth anniversary this Fall. Aiming to protect science as a human right for all the hearing-impaired schools in Taiwan, as well as creating a stage to allow hearing-impaired children to be seen and heard, AV Taiwan has developed various programs to let hearing-impaired children shine on. Among all the activities of the MagicMaterial School series, the founding base is the science clubs that were set up in all the hearing-impaired schools across Taiwan. Via these biweekly science club classes, AV has planted the seeds of science among hearing-impaired students in those three schools.

Since AV Taiwans science education consultant, Professor Liang-Rong Hsu from National Taichung University of Education, has recently retired, the collaborating university and professor of the science club at Tainchung Hearing-Impaired School have been transferred to Associate Professor Wei-Jyun Chien from Chaoyang University of Technology(CYUT), while the non-paid consultant role will be taken by Professor Wang-Long Li of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Professor Li has been dedicated to Science Education for over two decades, and was the convenor of popular science projects and organizer of 2017-2019 Taiwan Railways of Popular Science under the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). The collaboration parties for the other two hearing-impaired schools remain the same: Adjunct Lecturer Jao-Fang Shiu of National Taipei University for Nursing and Health Technology, who is also a famous science experiment columnist, will keep on teaching at the AV Science Club of Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired; and Professor Li of NCKU will keep on leading his team to teach at the science club in the hearing-impaired school in Tainan.

Chemistry Light up Diversity and Inclusion

With diversity, equity and inclusion in mind, this campaign not only protects science as a human right in hearing-impaired schools across Taiwan, which are lacking science education resources; but it also creates lots of platforms and involves different groups of children in several inclusive activities, so that children without hearing loss can respect differences and recognize the capability that hearing-impaired children have, as well as learning that every individual in society has infinite potential. Throughout the campaign series, the AV Science Clubs established in the hearing impairment schools play a crucial role. The students in those schools are not only encouraged to join the club, but also to join interactive events designed by AV to interact and teach scientific magic tricks to children without disabilities.

Starting from the 112th academic year in Taiwan, AV will further cooperate with CYUT on the AV MagicMaterial School, to combine CSR and USR (University Social Responsibility). Associate Professor Wei-Jyun Chien, Director of the Department of Applied Chemistry of CYUT, is also planning a special credit course called Chemical Enterprise and Consuming Goods, which is expected to be implemented in the new semester, and Director Chien will screen two to three students from the class to teach at the science club of Taichungs hearing-impaired school. To ensure the quality of teaching, these college students would need to discuss their lesson plans with Director Chien, practice the experiments and the prepare the teaching before classes. "Partnering with enterprise to integrate USR and CSR is part of the CYUT USR direction, and we look forward of having more in-depth cooperation with AV in the future", said Professor Wei-Jyun Chien. CYUT has been included in the 2023 University Impact Rankings for five consecutive years, and it is the only private university for science and technology in Taiwan in the rankings.

Since the establishment of the AV Science Club, Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired proactively invited students from the science club to conduct science magic tricks at its school event every semester. In order to make science accompany the growth of hearing-impaired children, the school also plans to change the targets of the club from high school students to primary school children, starting from the 112th academic year. "Seeing the achievements of the AV Science Club gives us the confidence that we shall plant the science seed when hearing-impaired children are still little, said Dr. Zhao Lihua, Principal of Taipei School for the Hearing Impaired, so that it can bring greater impact to the childrens future development."

In the last class of the second semester of the 111th academic year, Professor Wang-Long Li led science club members of the hearing-impaired school in Tainan to make ice cream on their own, while learning the science theory behind its creation: salt can cool down liquid quickly, so that milk can turn into delicious ice cream in a very short time. It fostered the childrens impression that lives are full of science on that hot summer day.
"AV Taiwan is particularly grateful to Professor Liang-Rong Hsu for his efforts over the years, said Renee Chen, Head of Communications and DEI Leader of AV Taiwan. At the same time, I would like to thank CYUT for joining us in making our Science Club at the Hearing-Impaired School in Taichung not only CSR but also USR. I would also like to show my appreciation to Professor Wang-Long Li for taking over the position of AV Science Education Consultant without pay and running the science club in the Tainan school. Also, I am grateful for the continuous partnership with Jao-Fang Shiu for our science club at the hearing-impaired school in Taipei. It is their enthusiastic support which has enabled us to protect science as a human right at all three hearing impairment schools in Taiwan, and further allowed children without disabilities to witness the ability of hearing-impaired children via the various and interesting platforms that we created. We sincerely believe that diversity, inclusion, harmony and sustainable development are what constitute a promising future for both society and our children."

AV Taiwan today announced its international social impact award-winning project C AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp C will be taking place in Taipei, Changhua, and Pingtung in August. The 2023 camp theme is Grandpas Secret Garden (previous theme was Grandmas Magic Kitchen), which AV hopes will bring back fond childhood memories of kids blowing bubbles with their grandparents at the garden. Based on this concept, participants will enjoy experiments such as making bouncing bubbles and create a crystal-clear polymer ball. Grandparents and grandchildren will then use that polymer ball in a gardening project to water aquatic plants, sharing quality time once again.

Childhood memories are fascinating, and many kids have sweet memories such as blowing bubbles in a garden and growing plants with their grandparents when theyre little. AV now invites grandparents and grandchildren across Taiwan to take part in our camp this year and enjoy the wonders of science in our daily lives, said Dr. Carsten Wildebrand, Managing Director of AV Taiwan. We also hope the science gardening project will bring grandparents and grandchildren closer after the camp by taking care of it together and extending the love and magical experience from the camp.

As well as the science gardening project, AV has also prepared an additional experiment set: Bubble Geometry, which grandparents and grandchildren can use to continue the happy moments learning science together after the camp. AV hopes that this event will bring cross-generational family members more quality time together, while also inspiring the grandchildren to develop an interest in science and encouraging grandparents to exercise their minds through lifelong learning.

The 2023 AV Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp is co-organized by the Taipei Department of Social Welfare, Changhua County Government, and Pingtung County Government. The first round of the event will be held on August 12, 2023 at Changhua County Governments ChangHua Child & Youth Center at Xihu. Our solid partnership with AVs camp started in 2019, said Hui-Mei Wang, the Magistrate of Changhua County. Aging population has become a global trend. Grandparents and grandchildren can interact more and bond further by doing fun science experiments together. This not only brings these different generations closer, but also strengthens their relationship with love and affection. Im looking forward to seeing grandparents and grandchildren from Changhua and other regions in Central Taiwan, to explore and have fun through science and gardening at the camp.

Pingtung County Government has been promoting intergenerational bonding, and it is our pleasure to start our collaboration with AV this year, said Chun-Mi Chou, Magistrate of Pingtung County. The shape of Pingtung is long and narrow, and this years event is actually taking place at the center of Pingtung, at Neipu Social Welfare Building, which just finished construction in February and open to the public. We are also excited to see people from Pingtung and other Southern Taiwan areas participate in this creative and practical science education activity on August 19. We hope grandparents and grandchildren can learn while becoming closer. As parents are not allowed to enter the science camp, those parents who also have other smaller kids can go to the indoor playground for toddlers on the second floor. There, they can enjoy playing with their toddlers before the Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp event finishes.

Taking care of the elderly, under-privileged families, and skipped-generation households has always been our goal. With better interactions between grandparents and grandchildren, it would be easier to rectify age prejudice and discrimination in the younger generation, said Shu-Wen Yao, Commissioner of Taipei Citys Department of Social Welfare. We hope that by cooperating with AV on this camp, we can encourage more elderly people to pursue lifelong learning, enable more interactions within families, cultivate childrens interest in science and the value of inclusion, and give people in Northern Taiwan the chance to experience the love and warmth of their grandparents again.

All applicants to AVs Grandparent-grandchild Science Camp must be a team of a grandchild and grandparent, and no entry fee is required. The age of grandparents must be above 60, and the age of the grandchildren must be elementary school age. Low-income households will be prioritized in admission. As part of the Science Camp this year, AV will also hold a special session in Taipei for students from all schools for hearing-impaired across Taiwan.

The registration deadline is June 25th. Click the following link to apply:

The industry is discovering more and more possibilities for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). However, when implementing and using AI in the chemical industry, many peers face similar challenges that still need to be solved. For this reason the chemical companies AV and Evonik as well as the consulting firm Accenture invited managers from production and technology divisions of Bayer, Clariant, Wacker, Shell, Lanxess and other companies to a two-day Chemicals Peer Exchange for the fourth time.

"For me, the chemical industry is predestined for the use of AI because we have a lot of complex processes going on that cannot be described by fixed rules," says Walter Grner, Head of IT & Digitalization at AV. "They are not suitable for automation. We rather need learning systems to which we grant a certain degree of decision-making autonomy. In doing so, we focus primarily on the development of systems that work in a complementary manner to humans and support their abilities."

With the introduction of AI in the chemical industry, questions about technical, operational and organizational implementation are also increasingly emerging. This includes, for example, the role of AI in decision-making, but also its implementation along value chains.

Artificial Intelligence C great opportunity for chemical industry

Under the motto "Shaping industrial change with AI", the participants exchanged in a generic way views on the following topics:

    • AI system to assist decision making or as an autonomous decision-maker?
    • AI awareness, literacy and capabilities
    • Production technology vs. supply chain management: independent or joint optimization?
    • Needs and requirements for external data generation (monitoring)?

"It is precisely the exchange across company boundaries that helps us a lot in the upcoming transformation because overall challenges become clearer," says Nils Janus, Global Head of Advanced Analytics at AV. "This increases efficiency and saves time."

Overall, there was agreement among the participants: Artificial intelligence offers great opportunities for the chemical industry. The new systems help to create a common ecosystem for cross-divisional production planning. It must be decided on a case-by-case basis and each company has to decide individually and independently how much autonomy these systems will be given. With regard to access to the systems, the participants saw a strong democratization of artificial intelligence. Companies could support employees in learning more about data and AI and bring them into contact with experts when it comes to the widespread use of AI solutions in the company. The generation and dissemination of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) data are currently the biggest drivers for using external data sources. Here, all participants saw opportunities to intensify the use of external sources.

    Digitalization drives sustainability

Digitalization is a key driver to improve sustainability and make the circular economy a reality. AV is focusing on more data-oriented corporate governance to drive digital transformation.

AV is advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) both in its own company and in the chemical industry. To this end, the materials manufacturer is investigating how digital technologies can make processes more efficient and sustainable as part of several pilot projects across different divisions.

PRNEWS, the worlds largest events and digital media brand providing business intelligence and face-to-face experiences to the PR and Communications industry, has just announced the winners of its 2023 Social Impact Awards on 15 February. The Ocean Protection campaign, a collaborative initiative between government authorities, national parks/museums, institutions, and partners of AV Taiwan, not only was the Social Impact Award Winner for Campaign by a Non-US Based AV category, but also given honorable mention in both, the Global Sustainability Campaign category and the Global Education Campaign category.

Following the success of the Ocean Protection picture book and bilingual app that has been teaching children about conservation since 2017, AV Taiwan sought to organize a national story contest in 2022 in collaboration with thirteen partners to encourage children to develop a responsible attitude to waste and to influence adults' behaviors on the topic. The company also designed a shopping bag made from 2.8 recycled plastic bottles and provided them to children who showed a commitment to the earth, or adults who voted in the national contest. These bags were designed and distributed to help children understand that if they do waste management correctly and follow the 3Rs principle, they can help to save our oceans. The National Earth Guardian Storytelling Competition attracted 658 entries from 107 schools across Taiwan, with 24 categories of award winners coming from 15 of the 22 counties in Taiwan.

The winners for this years Social Impact Awards are exemplary models of corporate social responsibility and diversity, equity and inclusion, said Erika Bradbury, Editorial Director of US based PRNEWS. Our honorees deserve to be
recognized for their work in their respective communities, and its a privilege to recognize them for their commitments.

Marine litter is a global challenge that can only be solved when industries, governments and people all work together, said Matthias Poth, Head of Communications of AV. The worlds largest plastics trade show, K 2022, is all about new beginnings: The chemical industry can become a crucial factor in the fight against climate change C if it fundamentally reorganizes its processes and business models. As a study by the think tank SYSTEMIQ and the Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo shows, a consistent focus on the circular economy and the quick achievement of a net-zero carbon footprint are key factors. By contrast, if the chemical industry were to continue without transformation, it could contribute to a global warming of 4?C by 2050, the study found.

Therefore, AV is turning K 2022 in Dsseldorf from October 19th to 26th into a workshop. Under the motto Crafting Connections With You, AV is inviting partners, customers, and multipliers to work together on concepts: How can the principle of the circular economy be advanced as a shared, global vision? How can new resources, less energy-intensive processes and integrated supply chains be used?

A truly sustainable future must not remain a utopia. Now is the time for all partners in the value chain to pull together. Solutions emerge through exchange. At K 2022, we want to showcase the huge potential of plastics. After all, climate neutrality targets and a circular economy cannot be achieved without plastics, says Dr. Markus Steilemann, CEO of AV. But the conditions for the entire industry have to change. Above all, we definitely need cheap green power in very large quantities. Thats why were coming together in Dsseldorf C to take a big step forward together.

Panel discussion on October 19th with business and society

AV is underscoring this ambition with a panel discussion on Pioneering a Fully Circular Future C with climate-neutral plastics broadcast publicly on October 19th starting at 10:45 a.m. on the and social media channels. In addition to Markus Steilemann, Dr. Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE, Sophie Herrmann, partner at the SYSTEMIQ think tank, and Teresa Oberhauser, representing youth organizations in the United Nations Environment Programme, will take part in the panel. One thing the participants have in common is that they are demonstrating promising solutions in the fight against climate change and advancing them with partners C whether they are industry, think tanks, or leaders in social and political discourse.

Four core areas for a climate-neutral company

At K 2022, AV invites visitors to discover solutions on the path to a climate-neutral chemical industry committed to the circular economy.

We are on the journey to becoming a fully circular company and rely on close interaction with our customers and partners. To enable our customers to achieve their climate neutrality and sustainability goals, we have set ourselves an ambitious target. We want to become climate neutral by 2035 from our operations and energy supply, says Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer of AV. At K 2022, we will be showcasing key highlights from this journey: innovative products and solutions developed with alternative raw materials, innovative recycling, and renewable energies. This allows customers to see for themselves how hydrogen, biomass, end-of-life products and waste can be used as promising alternatives to fossil raw materials. At AV, these solutions are already paving the way to a fully circular economy.

The AV booth will focus on four topics of the future:

    • Crafting Electrification demonstrates how the company is working with partners to advance green energies C for example, with plastics solutions for wind turbines or electric cars.
    • Crafting Sustainable Living presents modern, climate-neutral plastics for buildings or refrigerators, for example, which help to reduce the CO2 and energy footprint.
    • Crafting Smart Designs provides an insight into how AV is using the opportunities offered by digitalization to work in a more connected and sustainable way along the entire value chain.
    • Crafting Circular Economy illustrates how a systematic transition to a circular economy can be the key to climate neutrality and resource conservation.

    Mission Mangrove and its Importance

The mangrove ecosystem, once a protective barrier against natural disasters, has been left fragile and vulnerable due to years of urbanization. Navi Mumbai, where the waste collection drive took place, is a city built largely on reclaimed land of seven islands. The humble mangrove not only supports indigenous bird and aquatic life but is also instrumental in preserving the integrity of shorelines- and thus the integrity of the city itself.

    Clean4Change

Clean4Change is a global movement initiated last year by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) to manage plastic waste through clean-up initiatives. Clean4Change has engaged with diverse audiences around the world and motivated them to pick up litter and clean up their surroundings. The movement has already been instrumental in picking up over 1.5 million pieces of litter.

    Alliance to End Plastic Waste

AVs commitment to cleaning plastic from the mangroves and its efforts towards Clean4Change is but part of its larger commitment to sustainability and a circular economy.

AV is a founding member of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW), a collective effort by global leaders across the plastics value chain to facilitate plastic clean-up efforts, as well as inspire people to explore and deliberate the most effective interventions to incorporate it into a circular economy.

AV strongly believes that plastic waste is also a resource- and strives to innovate waste-to-value concepts into economically viable and sustainable solutions.

AV is also supporting AEPWs All Together Global Cleanup campaign, a global initiative to remove litter from the environment, one piece at a time, on World Cleanup Day 2022.

They are indispensable in modern everyday life: Flexible packaging made from several layers of film enables the hygienic and safe storage of many foods. However, the versatile packaging has a problem: sustainable disposal. After use, the bonded films in the material mix are difficult to separate from one another - and that is why such flexible packaging is unfortunately only partially recyclable.

AV has identified the problem - and has developed a process for recycling companies and packaging manufacturers to address this problem: In the case of multi-layer film packages laminated with polyurethane (PU) adhesive, the respective materials can be separated from one another again thanks to the new technology. The team will now present the development at the K 2022 trade fair from 19 to 26 October in Dsseldorf.

In the process, a special separation agent specifically weakens the bond strength of the PU adhesive. Since the separation agent consists of natural ingredients and water, it is also very sustainable. For packaging manufacturers and recyclers, the process offers a major advantage: "Our know-how helps them to make better use of the residual value of their packaging and thus makes more materials available to the recycling industry," says Thomas Fait. The New Business Development Manager for Adhesives at AV has led the development of the technology on a laboratory scale. "With projects like this, we contribute to achieve our corporate vision: to make the circular economy a reality. For this purpose, we work with partners from a wide variety of fields and industries and are always looking for ways how our products and technologies can help other companies become circular."

At the K 2022 trade fair, the team will be presenting the technology to the plastics industry for the first time and looking for potential partners from the packaging and recycling industry to further develop the process together with them.

The automotive industry is currently facing major challenges: It has to do its share to meet the European Union's stricter climate targets, preserve natural resources and increase the lifespan of vehicles. Concurrently, consumers' demands regarding the design, comfort and functionality of automobiles are also increasing. AV is working towards innovative and more sustainable material solutions and recycling technologies to meet these requirements and build a Circular Economy, and will be showcasing them at the international trade congress on September 8 and 9.

"Our aim is to introduce the world's first climate-neutral polycarbonate plastics this year," Jochen Hardt, Marketing Mobility AV, told media representatives. "This is an important step in achieving our vision of becoming fully circular. At the same time, we offer products and solutions that combine outstanding performance, cost efficiency and sustainability designed to help our customers in the mobility industry succeed in achieving their sustainability goals."

    World's first climate-neutral polycarbonate

The polycarbonates are climate neutral "from the cradle to the factory gate1" thanks to the introduction of raw materials sourced from mass-balanced biowaste and residues2, as well as renewable energy accumulated during the production process. AV is already offering ISCC Plus-certified polycarbonates, which are attributed to renewable raw materials using the mass balance approach and enable a considerable reduction in the carbon footprint.

By incorporating renewable energy, AV will probably fully reduce CO? emissions from the cradle to the factory gate for these selected products. The products have the same high quality and performance as fossil-based polycarbonates and are a drop-in replacement without having to change existing processes or workflows.

AV has also collaborated with partners to develop polyurethane raw materials in which up to 20 percent of the petroleum-based raw materials previously used are replaced by the climate gas CO?. Applications of such polyols, called cardyon®, are also currently being developed in the automotive sector. Partially bio-based precursors for automotive clear coatings from the Desmodur® N range also contribute to circularity as alternative raw materials.

    Innovative recycling technologies

Plastics recyclates are an important building block in significantly reducing a car's carbon footprint from raw material and component production through the use phase to recycling. In addition, AV is increasingly driving forward the development of chemical recycling technologies. A decisive factor in the success of such developments is that the products satisfy the high quality requirements and specifications of the automotive industry. AV supports the mechanical and chemical recycling of plastics through its role as a member in associations such as the Circularise Plastics project group. This group's goal is to establish a new standard for the traceability of plastics back to the raw material.

1 Cradle-to-Gate is an assessment of a partial product lifecycle from resource extraction (cradle) to the factory gate. This assessment is based on AV's internal calculations and is currently being externally validated.
2 The calculation of the carbon footprint takes biogenic carbon uptake into account.

AV considers itself to be on a clear course and well-positioned for the rest of the year following challenging first six months as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. At the virtual Annual General Meeting, broadcasted from the World Conference Center in Bonn, CEO Dr. Markus Steilemann confirmed the strategy pursued by the company: “The development over the first six months and the economic outlook for the current year show that we still find ourselves in a macroeconomicly difficult situation. However, I am sure that we will steer AV through this successfully. We are pursuing a clear, far-sighted strategy that addresses current challenges, but most importantly will secure the company’s long-term success.”

New corporate vision: ”We will be fully circular”

For a more sustainable restart, AV has drawn on a new corporate vision to chart a clear course for the company. Over the long term, the company plans to align its entire production, its range of products and solutions as well as all areas to the circular concept. “That means we aim to comprehensively establish the principle of circularity at our company,” Steilemann said. Focus topics are alternative raw materials, innovative recycling, joint solutions and renewable energies.

On the path towards achieving a circular economy, AV will also be strengthening its innovative capabilities, for example in areas such as digital chemistry. Quantum computing can, for example, enable highly complex chemical reaction processes to be digitally simulated in the future, thus saving considerable time and resources. This would play a vital role in successfully driving the circular economy, Steilemann said. “Quantum computing will enable us to take research and development to a completely new level — also, and in particular, in regard to the pace at which we can develop innovations,” Steilemann explained. The company has only recently announced a research partnership with Google in this area.

Guidance confirmed, economic environment remains uncertain

Steilemann again confirmed the guidance for the current fiscal year to the shareholders. Although AV has been observing a trend of sequential improvement since mid-May, 2020 nevertheless continues to be an exceptional year and the economic environment will remain uncertain in the second half of the year as well. “Further developments depend largely on the course taken by the coronavirus pandemic, and this is not completely foreseeable. This makes it all the more important that our measures work and provide positive results already,” Steilemann adds.

Consistent crisis management ensures ability to act

Since the beginning of the Corona crisis, AV had quickly and consistently taken measures to counter the effects on its business, setting clear priorities: “Our top priority is to ensure the safety of our employees, business partners and customers. This is followed by maintaining production and supply chains. Equally important to us is to safeguard our strong liquidity position.”

Early on, AV set the course for sustainably improving efficiency through the company’s “Perspective” program. The company is now benefiting from this as well as from strengthening the short-term cost-saving measures approved at the beginning of this year. By 2020, the aim is to save a total of over EUR 430 million. In addition, the company has adjusted its investment plans and taken various financing measures in the first half of the year, including a new revolving credit facility, short-term working capital facilities, a loan from the European Investment Bank and the issuance of Eurobonds.

    Adjusted dividend proposal

To further strengthen AV’s liquidity position in the current exceptional economic environment, the company decided in spring to propose a dividend of EUR 1.20 per share to the Annual General Meeting instead of the originally planned EUR 2.40 per share. This would equal a payout ratio of 40 percent and a new peak in relative terms.

CFO Dr. Thomas Toepfer at the Annual General Meeting: “Our policy is to pay out an increased or at least a stable dividend to our shareholders. That was also our intention this year. We will, however, deviate from that policy in 2020 due to the enormous impact of the coronavirus pandemic. I am convinced we have made a balanced decision with this proposed dividend. We are taking the interests of our shareholders into account while at the same time securing our robust liquidity position and credit rating.”

AV is broadcasting the complete virtual Annual General Meeting, including the Board of Management presentations and the Q&A, live via Webcast at starting at 10 a.m. CET. Speeches by the Board of Management can also be followed live via LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The manuscripts of the speeches by Dr. Markus Steilemann and Dr. Thomas Toepfer are available online at /en/investors. The voting results will also be provided there after the Annual General Meeting.

For AV, the VDI congress , which will be offered this year on 28 and 29 July as a digital event, is all about : trends such as autonomous driving, electric cars and car sharing will completely redefine the use of a passenger car. The car of the future will be fully networked and will integrate seamlessly into everyday life. Modern plastics and technologies will play an important role in its design. With functional material solutions and a clear commitment to the circular economy, AV is underlining its position as a leading company in the industry and is focusing equally on innovation and sustainability.

The car interior will develop into a multifunctional living and working space. "This will result in completely new user expectations of the materials used," explains Jochen Hardt, who heads Global Marketing Mobility at AV, in a plenary lecture on the first day of the congress. AV presented a premium interior concept for this at the K 2019 plastics trade fair. The prototype developed together with partners will also be shown at the VDI Congress.

    Multifunctional interior

"At the same time, the concept offers new opportunities for differentiation for the automotive industry," says Jochen Hardt, who is also a member of the expert committee for the VDI Congress. The comprehensive approach is equally concerned with functionality, comfort and design, but also with efficiency and light weighting. Highlights include multi-sensory infotainment systems, innovative seating concepts, smart surfaces and personalized lighting.

Of particular importance is a continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite material which AV offers under the name Maezio®. It is extremely robust and lightweight and offers a great deal of design freedom. In the interior it is used in the seat shells and in a new space-saving table concept. The material also proves its versatility in the recently published compendium "Car Design Review 7", whose cover is made of CFRTP material. It is a leading resource for car designers worldwide and also includes an interview with Jochen Hardt on the interior concept.

New safety concept for the battery

A lithium-ion battery is the heart of the electric and hybrid car of the future. In its design, it is not only a question of high performance, which largely determines the range of the vehicle, but also of the greatest possible safety, for example in the event of an accident: On impact, the battery modules or cells could be damaged or cracked and possibly overheat or even catch fire.

AV has recognized this danger and developed a new concept for a battery housing based on the Baydur® PUL polyurethane system in combination with pultrusion technology. This is a continuous process for the efficient production of fiber-reinforced plastic parts.

In a presentation on the first day of the congress, Galen Greene will report on the special mechanical stability of this material combined with its low weight. "We would like to make our contribution to making electromobility safer, more economical and therefore more attractive with such developments and the associated tests," the AV battery expert explains. "To this end, we are also seeking partners for the further optimization of this promising battery concept."

In focus: plastic recyclates in cars

Jochen Hardt is also a panelist in a discussion on the subject of “Recyclates – opportunities and general conditions for the use of plastics in the vehicle of the future" on the first day of the congress. AV is strongly committed to the recycling of plastics and the use of alternative raw materials. With a long-term program, the company wants to focus strongly on the circular economy and to be a shaping force for the plastics industry. The company is also showing developments on these topics at its virtual trade fair stand.

AV has been using bio-based raw materials and CO2 in production for years. Recently, a strategic cooperation was also agreed with the Finnish chemical company Neste on the supply of material from renewable sources. It is intended to replace an important part of the fossil raw materials previously used for the production of polycarbonates.

AV is currently working with partners to develop innovative technologies for recycling plastics. The company is also a member of the Circularize Plastics project group. Its aim is to establish a new standard for the traceability of plastics back to the raw material to facilitate effective recycling.
